Introduction

Let sleeping dogs lie. (寝た犬は起こしてはいけない。, Neta inu wa okoshite wa ikenai) is the 8th episode of the first season of The Ancient Magus Bride anime.

Synopsis[]

The kid, whose name is revealed to be Cartaphilus, attacks Chise and her group with his Chimera with a newly attached head that once belonged to Isabel. In retaliation, Chise forms a pact with the Church Grim, Ulysses, and changes his name to Ruth, granting them the power to defeat Cartaphilus and learn a little more about the mysterious boy.

Summary[]

After having been struck and lost consciousness, Chise finds herself in the monstrous arms of her teacher. But as Elias is consumed by rage, Elias lets go of her and starts attacking the kid's Chimera while Ulysse attempts to awaken Chise. Being in contact with Ulysse makes her dream about his past with Isabel and of her demise before waking up again.

Just then, Elias finishes off the Chimera, which the kid acts sad and disappointed by, but is provoked by Elias when he addresses him by his true name Cartaphilus. Before the two can make a move against the other, Chise restrains Elias while Cartaphilus gets shot in the back of his head by Renfred.

Immediately after this, Elias transforms back into his true form, and Renfred then disciplines Alice for her foolish actions. Cartaphilus then arise, claiming he wants to use Ulysse for his experiments. When questioned by Renfred on why he violated the agreement between Mages and Sorcerers by invading the fairy lands, he reveals that it seemed fun. The Chimera that Elias defeated then arises, now sporting the head of Isabel.

After confirming that Cartaphilus was the same person who caused the incident in Ulthar that involved Matthew and Mina, Chise becomes triggered. She then recalls Elias' advice about Magic and summons black hornets to her side. Although Elias tries to stop her, he's initially prevented from doing so after Chise absorbs some of his energy, but was successful in his second attempt. Blue Flame then shows up and teleports them away to a safe location.

Once safe, the faerie is identified as Will o' The Wisp, and he quickly bickers with Elias before both of them retort to calm Chise down with one of his coal. He then helps Ulysse realize his true nature as a Church Grim, and upon remembering what he truly is, he offers himself as a familiar to Chise.

Will o' The Wisp admonishes the proposal, and Elias further explains its details. Before a decision is made, Cartaphilus returns, loses his left arm to Alice's gunshots, and couldn't prevent Chise and Ulysse from forming their pact. This sequentially led to Ulysse being renamed Ruth and him killing "Isabel". Before Cartaphilus retreats, he details his motives and states his name is Joesph. Renfred then briefly explains Cartaphilus' past with the Son of God; with that, he and his apprentice also leave. Elias, Chise, and Ruth witness Will o' The Wisp leading the dead souls to the afterlife and then leave.
